Project Description: The work included a new extension and refurbishment of the existing chapel, with new furnaces, staff room, vestry and kitchen and welfare facilities with associated new access and footpaths. Additional car parking spaces, improvements to the interior and exterior of the building and a new waiting area for families, as well as extension and renovation work to the existing chapel and crematorium.
Rowley Regis Crematorium has served the local community for 45 years and during this time has remained relatively unchanged. The necessity to replace ageing cremators provided Sandwell MBC with the catalyst to upgrade this important community facility.
The Council was anxious to ensure that the proposed modernisation will make the crematorium and its ancillary buildings fit to meet the demands of the bereaved well into the twenty first century
In order to deliver this vision the Council appointed a project team made up of qualified specialists & a Principal Contractor partner with a proven track record in modernisation and refurbishment of public buildings in live environments, which Interclass were successful in fulfilling.
As the Prime Contractor Interclass were ultimately responsible for delivery of the overall project service delivery and with whom the Contract with the Council was made.
The extension to the chapel was undertaken whilst the existing chapel and crematorium remained in use, requiring careful and regular liaison between our site team and the crematorium staff to plan noisy/disruptive works.
Visitors to the crematorium and adjoining cemetery continued to use the site throughout the works, with Interclass planning, controlling and segregating the works areas from the general public with fencing and barriers, erecting warning signage and notices to ensure they were always given priority
Clients View: “This project was always going to be difficult keeping services going while construction work was carried out until closure. Interclass managed the site exceptionally and worked well with the staff. I cannot commend the site manager enough as he helped solve problems we encountered throughout the refurbishment of the building” Sue Flynn, Bereavement and Registration Services, Sandwell M.B.C.
